GME EMPLOYEES MAKE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
ISC Sponsored GME Food Drive Garyville, LA – –
<Article published in the GME Newsletter> On December 12, 2008, the GME project hosted a food drive for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana. The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank helps more than 7,300 people each day and provides food to agencies completely free of charge. Second Harvest has a network of 2 – member food banks across the country and supplies more than 2 billion pounds of food annually. The recent economic downturn has had a major impact on food banks across the country. Food Bank needs continue to rise, yet donors have had to scale back their contributions. In Southern Louisiana, needs increased by 25-30% during 2008 due to hurricane impact and economic slow down.
Marathon eagerly supported the food drive as volunteers from the GME Project stepped up to coordinate this event with two local food banks. As the date approached, signs and banners were posted throughout the GME Project as reminders to all associates. On the morning of the drive, nearly 4,000 pounds of food and $5,000 were collected. That’s equivalent to over 65,000 meals that the GME Project donated that morning! All donations were distributed to the surrounding communities.
The food drive was a great success and an amazing way for the Marathon GME Project to help those in need. We encourage everyone to make donations to their local food pantries throughout the year; it’s not just during the holidays that people need help. Thank you to everyone for participating. You certainly made a difference in the lives of many this holiday season!
