BASF-EOE/EG Capacity Upgrade Project

This project won an ABC Pelican Chapter Merit Award and a Louisiana Contractor Merit Award in 2001.

The BASF Corporation (BASF) approved a multi-million-dollar EOE/EG capacity upgrade at its Geismar, Louisiana, Chemical Plant that entailed construction of a completely new EO/EG Unit, upgrades for all existing ethylene glycol units, and new power-distribution and rack-room buildings. As an added challenge, these new systems required tie-ins to an existing EG unit control room that remained in operation throughout the project. Jacobs Engineering Group was retained to perform the engineering services and the project began in June of 2000.

ISC was awarded a $4.2-million contract, to install all electrical and instrumentation systems. Work was performed under a newly adopted BASF Tier II Construction Services Agreement that encouraged early front-end involvement by ISC.

Work was organized in two phases. The new EO/EG unit was completed during phase one, a process that took nearly 84,000 direct-labor manhours. Tower dress-out work and installation of instrumentation in the upgraded EG area took place in phase two and required another 10,000 direct-labor manhours.

All work on the new EO/EG structure took place in phase one, during which ISC installed all wiring for power, control and instrumentation along with related raceways, instruments, heat tracing and tubing. ISC’s phase-one responsibilities also included new control equipment, as well as challenging tie-ins to an existing control room that continued to operate while the work was done.
