Motiva Power Systems Expansion Project

This project won an ABC Pelican Chapter Merit Award and a Louisiana Contractor Merit Award in 2001.

In July of 2000, Motiva Enterprises, L.L.C. and CDI Engineering of Baton Rouge selected ISC to perform all work associated with Phase I of Motiva’s Power Systems Expansion Project (PSE) at their Convent, Louisiana refinery.

The Motiva PSE project was designed to add capacity and improve power system reliability. The heart of the job was a completely new electrical distribution system consisting of three 38KV electrical substations and massive pole-line infrastructure.

A total of two hundred class H-3 utility poles were installed. With an average diameter of three feet and lengths up to 75 feet, these “H-structure” poles are among the largest used anywhere in pole-line construction.

When complete, this 200-pole system carried more than four miles of 750-MCM, insulated 38KV triplex cable with supporting messenger cable. Sixty-six in-line splices were specially designed for this heavyweight cable, which was among the heaviest ever manufactured by the cable supplier.
