ABOUT THIS PROJECT
When Valero decided to build a new hydrocracker at its St. Charles Refinery facility located in south Louisiana, it turned to an industry leader in hydrogen production, Praxair, to help complete the innovative new project. Hydrocrackers play a key role in the production of petroleum-based fuels by breaking down hydrogen molecules in order to produce more refined gasoline and diesel fuel.
To meet its client’s needs, Praxair committed to building a 135,000,000 scfd hydrogen plant at Valero’s St. Charles Refinery, which would provide hydrogen and 400,000 pounds per hour of steam at the new 50,000 barrel-a-day hydrocracker.
S&B Engineers and Constructors, Ltd. was selected by Praxair to be the general contractor responsible for executing the project. S&B selected ISC for the electrical and instrumentation (E&I) scope of Praxair’s Hydrogen Plant SMR and Compression Project, and ISC enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity to join the effort.
“S&B generally direct hires the E&I portion of their projects, although during the development of the project execution plan, S&B recognized many potential risks in direct hiring the E&I portion of this project, which directed us to subcontract this work. ISC had been chosen to work directly with S&B based on their past performance and the ability to execute work in the area.” – S&B Engineers and Constructors, LTD.
